# Identity Verification (KYC)

Megapot is building the internet's first community-funded jackpot, and we want as many people as possible to be able to participate. To make that happen, we obtained a gaming license that allows us to operate in many countries around the world.

Part of holding that license means we need to verify our users are not using the platform for money-laundering, fraud, or financing terrorism. This process is a standard requirement for any crypto exchange or licensed gaming platform. Full verification is handled by our third-party provider Sumsub (trusted by OKX, Bybit, Blockchain.com and more), which stores your documents and handles any data requests. For the reduced check described below, Megapot records your name, date of birth, and country against your account directly.

> [!NOTE]
>
> One important note: the KYC requirements described here apply specifically to users of the Megapot.io platform. The Megapot protocol itself operates separately and autonomously from Megapot.io. Anyone can use it without permission by interacting with the [smart contracts](https://docs.megapot.io/learn/using-smart-contracts.md) via third-party interfaces like Basescan.

## When Do I Need to Verify?

You do not need to verify your identity to buy tickets or participate in drawings. Identity checks apply when you take prize winnings out of Megapot, and full verification is also triggered once your aggregate lifetime deposits reach \$10,000.

### The \$500 prize limit is a lifetime total

Megapot adds up the prize winnings you have already withdrawn over time, plus the withdrawal you are about to make. That total decides what we ask for. It is not a limit on each claim or each cash-out.

* **\$500.00 or less in total.** You provide a short set of details once: your full legal name, your date of birth (you must be at least 18), and your country of residence. If you are already approved by Sumsub, you skip this.
* **More than \$500.00 in total, even by one cent.** Full verification through Sumsub is required. The short set of details is not enough.
* **Already approved by Sumsub.** You are allowed with no total to check, for as long as your approval is current. If a refresh is due, you will be asked to complete it first.
* **Rejected by Sumsub.** You cannot take prize winnings out of Megapot. You will see a notice to contact support.

You enter the short details once and they carry over to later claims. If the check has not finished, the claim waits rather than going through.

Sumsub can appear for a withdrawal that is smaller than $500. It appears as soon as one withdrawal would take your lifetime total over $500.

**Example.** You withdraw $300 of prize winnings and give the short details. Later you withdraw $200. Your total is exactly $500.00, so the short details are still enough. If you then withdraw $1 more, your total would be \$501, so Sumsub verification is needed first.

### What counts toward your total

Only prize winnings count. That means:

* Winnings you claim to a wallet outside Megapot, and winnings you cash out of your Megapot wallet (see below).
* Guaranteed Prize cash sent to a wallet outside Megapot, and Guaranteed Prize cash you cash out of your Megapot wallet (see below).

These count across all the wallets linked to your account, both your Megapot wallet and any external wallets you have linked. Your total includes prize winnings you withdrew at any point since Megapot v2 launched, including before this change.

These never count:

* Referral fees.
* Liquidity provider withdrawals.

Prizes can no longer be turned into tickets, and free-ticket prizes now pay USDC cash. That cash counts toward the \$500 limit when you take it out.

### How withdrawals from your Megapot wallet are counted

Your Megapot wallet can hold both money you deposited and prize winnings. When you spend, such as buying tickets, prize winnings are used first. When you withdraw, your deposits are used first. Only the part of a withdrawal that is more than your deposits counts as prize winnings withdrawn.

**Example.** You deposit $100, win $300, buy $100 of tickets, then withdraw $250. \$150 of that withdrawal counts toward your total.

### Claims to an external wallet

When you claim winnings to a wallet you have linked, the claim itself is what counts, at the moment it happens on the blockchain. This includes a claim made directly through the smart contract, as long as the wallet is linked to your account. What you do with the money inside your own wallet afterward is not tracked.

Guaranteed Prize cash sent to an external wallet is checked when the payout is made, and claims submitted together count together. Guaranteed Prize cash sent to your Megapot wallet is not checked at payout. It is checked later, when you cash out.

### What you will see

* **"Checking your account history."** This can show while your total loads. The first time it can take a minute. If the lookup fails, you will see a "Try again" button.
* **Paused cash-outs.** If your history cannot be checked, cash-outs and claims through Megapot pause until it can be checked. We never fall back to a per-transaction check. Guaranteed Prize cash payouts retry on their own instead of failing.
* **Withdrawals appear shortly.** A withdrawal shows in your total shortly after it is confirmed.

Deposit thresholds for buying tickets are unchanged.

**Verification is reusable.** You only need to complete Sumsub verification once. Your verified status then carries across future withdrawals. Megapot may ask you to refresh it periodically (at least every 12 months), as required by our [KYC Policy](https://docs.megapot.io/appendix/kyc-policy.md).

> [!WARNING]
>
> Identity verification is separate from the public disclosure required for prizes of $1,000 or more. A prize at that size needs both: verification, *and* an approved winner celebration. See [Guaranteed Prizes](https://docs.megapot.io/appendix/guaranteed-prizes.md#claiming-prizes-of-$1000-or-more).

## How Do I Complete Verification?

When it is time to verify, we will guide you through the process. We use a third-party verification provider, Sumsub, to help you through the process. Here is what to expect:

**Step 1:** You will be prompted at the point the check is needed, whether that is a claim or cash-out that takes your lifetime prize withdrawals over $500, or crossing the $10,000 lifetime deposit threshold. While your total stays at \$500 or less, we ask only for the short details instead.

**Step 2:** Sumsub will guide you through the process. You will need to provide:

* A photo of a valid government-issued ID (passport, driver's license, or national ID card)
* A selfie or short video of yourself
* Some basic identifying information

**Step 3:** Sumsub reviews your submission. This usually takes just a few minutes.

**Step 4:** Once approved, you are all set. You will only need to complete this process once.

## Your Data is Secure

We take your privacy seriously. Here is how your information is protected:

* **We do not store your documents.** All identity documents and photos are securely stored by Sumsub, our third-party verification provider. Megapot does not hold copies of your ID or selfies.

* **Sumsub is a trusted provider.** They work with thousands of companies worldwide and follow strict data protection standards.
